Dr. Ruigang Yang is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science. While many researchers are working in the area of 3D visual reconstruction and display, Yang is one of a few devoting attention to both the acquisition and rendering aspects simultaneously. The 3D aspect of Dr. Yang’s work is the key to achieving the lifelike immersive experience he envisions. He’s developing a novel display technology that precisely controls the generation and transmission of light in a view-dependent way (meaning that the image you see will change depending on the direction in which you glance at the display screen) that will provide the effect of 3D without requiring special glasses. This technology could ultimately be found in long-distance education, teleconferencing, and telecollaboration – any situation where individuals separated by distance would benefit from realistic interaction.
