Imaging

View from the Window at Le GrasThe world’s first photographic image was taken about 182 years ago. Called “View from the Window at Le Gras”, it was an image of a pigeon house and barn as seen through the window of French photographer and pioneer Joseph Nicephore Niepce.

Fast forward to 1957 when digitization of photographs became possible starting with Russell A. Kirsch at the National Bureau of Standards, who used a scanner with a rotating drum to digitize and redisplay an image of his newborn son. There is no question that these events and the advances with images and video that have followed have transformed our science and our culture. Now in the twenty first century, imaging technology is a center point of research as we push the boundaries of creating, preserving and duplicating images.

Research in imaging at the Vis Center encompasses projects in diverse areas such as medicine, military and the humanities.
