Media for Research Labs
The Media for Research Lab at the Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments is a creative media production laboratory that promotes and publicizes research at the University of Kentucky. Our mission is to partner with researchers over an extended period of time to establish creative and engaging narratives that explain, support, promote, and publicize complex research efforts.
The Media Experience for Undergrads is a program where undergraduates intern with the Media for Research Lab for a semester. Interns become members of research teams and document the projects through video. Throughout the semester, the students gain an understanding of the project and how to properly represent the research. At the end of the semester, the student will have completed a piece that the investigators can use to promote their research.
In addition to assisting the research teams with documentation, the interns create 30 minute broadcast quality documentaries that air across the nation on the ResearchChannel.
ResearchChannel is a nonprofit media and technology organization that connects a global audience with the research and academic institutions whose developments, insights and discoveries affect our lives and futures.
Through cable and satellite distribution, ResearchChannel is available to more than 22 million U.S. households. The channel is also available on select academic networks in the United States and other countries. Online, ResearchChannel uses advanced streaming and broadband technologies to provide programs via a live webstream and an extensive video-on-demand library. The library houses more than 2,700 full-length programs that are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments is a multi-disciplinary department involving students and faculty from computer science, electrical engineering, psychology and fine arts. The Center, through research, education and external partnerships, strives to enable new visualization technologies and advance the art of immersive visualization by addressing the scientific and engineering challenges related to visual simulations and virtual environments.
Towards this goal, Center researchers are building state-of-the-art visualization and display environments for different applications. The research topics include efficient 3D data acquisition and analysis, as well as computer vision and graphics problems related to model acquisition and tracking of subjects in order to populate and preserve realistic three-dimensional scenes.
The Media Experience for Undergrads is a great opportunity for students to gain real world experience in media production.
